Strengthening Our Healthcare System

Our Work to Improve How We Care for One Another

Our government has made significant strides in healthcare since 2015, with a key focus on enhancing accessibility, quality, and affordability. Through a combination of financial investments, collaborative agreements with provinces and territories, and targeted initiatives, our government has brought about positive changes across various areas of healthcare.

The following categories summarize some of the core accomplishments and investments.

Building Stronger Healthcare

Since 2015, our government has taken significant steps to strengthen healthcare. Through strategic financial investments, we have:

  • Made an additional $2 billion top-up to the Canada Health Transfer, specifically addressing pediatric hospitals, emergency rooms, and long wait times for surgeries.
  • Committed $198.6 billion in federal funding over ten years to support healthcare.
  • Tailored bilateral agreements with provinces and territories, amounting to $25 billion over ten years, to address shared health priorities such as family health services, health worker shortages, mental health and substance use, and modernization of the health system.

Workforce Capacity

Recognizing the importance of healthcare professionals in delivering quality care, our government has placed a strong emphasis on enhancing workforce capacity and the capabilities of long-term care facilities. To do this, we are:

  • Increasing the maximum forgivable Canada Student Loans by 50 percent for doctors and nurses serving underserved rural and remote communities. This provides up to $60,000 in loan forgiveness for doctors and up to $30,000 for nurses, aiming to attract more healthcare professionals to communities in need.
  • Making a $3 billion investment through Health Canada to improve national standards and bring about permanent changes in the long-term care sector.
  • Introducing the Aging-Well-At-Home Initiative, which matches seniors with volunteers from community-based organizations to support them at home and combat isolation.

Pharmacare

Accessible and affordable medication is crucial for the well-being of all Canadians. To address this, our government has:

  • Collaboration with provinces and territories to implement a universal national pharmacare program, including historic actions to lower drug prices and streamline drug approval processes.
  • Development of a national strategy for drugs for rare diseases and investments in biomanufacturing and life sciences.

Dental Care

Our government understands the impact of oral health on overall well-being, particularly for children, that is why we have made substantial investments in building a comprehensive national dental care system. This includes:

  • An Investment of $13 billion for five years and ongoing funding of $4.4 billion to establish a national dental care system.
  • Families with children under 12 are eligible to claim $1,300 over two years for dental care, with the aim to expand coverage to all Canadians earning less than $90,000 per year.
  • The establishment of an oral health fund to reduce barriers to oral care in rural and remote communities.

Mental Health

Our government recognizes the importance of mental health and well-being,that is why we have prioritized investments in mental health support across the country. This includes:

  • The allocation of over $8.5 million to support community mental health services and programs addressing isolation among seniors, substance use, depression, and health challenges in children.
  • An investment of $140 million in the Wellness Together Canada portal and an additional $100 million for the Substance Use and Addictions Program to combat the opioid crisis.

Women's Healthcare

Our government has taken significant steps to protect and enhance women’s rights in healthcare. This includes:

  • Ensuring access to safe and legal abortions by withholding Canada Health Transfer payments from provinces imposing charges or restrictions.
  • An investment of $36 million to improve sexual and reproductive health services.
  • Providing funding to organizations like Action Canada and NAF Canada to expand access to abortion care and support.
