In 2013, my wife, Ravi, and I discussed getting into federal politics. We were married on the August long weekend, and we were thinking about the future we wanted to see for our family and our country.
Growing up, Dad was a janitor, and Mom raised three kids. We didn’t have much, so we delivered papers, shovelled snow and collected bottles to save money. At 13, my parents divorced, and my brother Doug and I moved out. I worked on a farm, and Doug moved in with foster parents.
Ravi and I both believed in hard work and education, and we were the first in our families to get our degrees. This was possible because we live in a country that rewards hard work and provides everyone with a real and fair chance at success. Ravi came from a family that immigrated to Canada and had a similar experience.
I got into politics to make a difference for our community. When I first started knocking on doors ahead of the 2015 election, I promised that I would be the hardest-working M.P. in the country. Over the past nine years, I have done everything possible to deliver on that promise. I’ve replied to and acted on over 20,000 surveys, while breaking records nationally for the most door knocks and phone calls. In 2023, I was recognized as the hardest-working constituency M.P. in Canada, and in 2024, I was the first M.P. to be recognized with that distinction 2 years in a row. Everyone in our community who asks for a face-to-face meeting with me gets one, and I’ve kept that promise for more than a decade. My girls, Solar and Nova, keep me more motivated than ever to continue working with our community to deliver results for Burnaby, the District of North Vancouver and Canada.
I’ve approached politics differently, placed partisanship aside and worked hard to build strong relationships with community members, leaders, and elected officials from all parties and all levels of government so that our community has a loud voice and gets things accomplished. I’ve focused on making life more affordable, improving healthcare, and fighting climate change while growing our economy. As a G7 nation, we have the lowest deficit, lowest net debt to GDP ratio, and the best foundation for economic growth. We grew that fiscal advantage by continuing to reduce our debt to GDP ratio while increasing pension benefits and launching programs like childcare, dentalcare, and pharmacare.
Since becoming the Minister of Citizens’ Services, I have focused on improving services while reducing the size and cost of government. Digitalization of government services means that you can access the services you need without standing in line or taking time off work. These improvements are also significantly reducing the marginal cost of service provision.
We need this work to continue. This election is a crucial point in Canada’s history where we need to make an important choice about the future of our country. If you trust me with your vote again, I promise to continue working hard to build a more sustainable, equitable, affordable and competitive Canada and a positive future for Burnaby and North Vancouver.
In your service always,
